The mower you have is probable much like mine.There is a small disk-brake on the right hand side of the mower trans-axle.If you jack it up and look underneath by pushing on the brake peddle you will find the actuating rod.This has an adjustment nut on it that can be tightened but if the brake pucks are really worn find the brake caliper on that side and tighten the nut in the center that holds the actuating arm in place.Otherwise you need new brake pucks installed.

i was able to down load the complete service manual for my mtd rider and the parts one as well. check murrays’ web site and see if you can too. i grew up in the parts business and i was having some problems with the local power equipment house supplying the correct parts. i knew that i was giving him the correct info, and now i know that he’s not too good at looking them up. it’s great to be able to call and order what i want by number now. good luck, it was free by the way.

You really should call a small engine repair shop in town and find out, they usually sell the parts or do the work. See what you can do and what you can afford. you can fix them but you need to know what is wrong and have the skill to do it. It might be better to take it to them and see what it will cost before trying it yourself. You could talk to a friend that is mechanically inclined and watch them and throw them a few bucks and then do it yourself next time. Good luck.

It doesn’t have true brakes it is pressure applied to the belt pulley by a spring. If you get a light and study the system, I think you will figure out what is wrong.
