I have to say I love my old fashioned push mower! It is the best for the environment, and they are very easy to push around so even having a large yard (which it sounds like you do) will probably not be too bad.
They are mostly the least expensive, are light (I am small but I can pick mine up with one hand), make no loud noises, don't kick dirt and little pebbles up at you, don't need a trip to the gas station every other week, don't have cords to trip over, and some of them come with catch bags for the clippings so you won't even need to rake them up.
It might be worth it to look into.

We just bought a Toro self-propelled on sale at Home Depot. It is a fantastic lawnmower! It's a pull start, but ours only needed about 1/2 of a pull to crank right up.

As others have said - electric mowers have little power on hills or uneven ground.

Consumer Reports ranked our Toro right up towards the top - and they were right!

electric mowers are not very powerful and they have to be charged often. If you have a small yard and mow it often then they are great. otherwise I would get a gass powered mower. go to lowes or home depot and tell the associate what you need. those guys go through intensive training on evaluating customers needs. that way if you buy it and dont like it just return it.

I agree with that other guy...Go to sears and look at theirs. Great price and value for the gas push mower.

your best bet is to go to sears and look at their craftsman mowers they have many types and styles i recommend go wit at least a 21inch mower and also remember the ones with the biggest wheels on the rear are very easy th push and dont buy one that has a bag or else you will have to start it and stop every time the bag is full get one that has a mulching blade

We have a Honda and I love it. it is easy to start, fairly quite and relatively clean running.

with an electric, you always have to drag the cord around.. what a pain!

Well, Consumer Reports in their May 2007 issue just rated mowers. The most reliable are Craftsman, Honda and Toro for push & self-propelled. Among the most repair prone were John Deere for self-propelled and Lawn Boy for push mowers.

We have a push gas powered mower and our neighbor has an electric mower. We notice his just does not have the same power ours does, especially on unlevel ground or hills. Plus, electricity in our area is very expensive so his is actually more costly to run and keep charged than our gas mower.
