Can’t make a used gas lawnmower work by pulling the string despite following instructions on machine. Help?

lawnmower
james f asked:

Recently I bought a second hand gas lawn mower. It is supposed to work but I failed in my attempt. I checked the 50:1 gas and oil, opened the fuel level, turned on the switch, and pulled the string many times from the top of the machine. I read the instructions on the machine. No sound. Did I fail to operate correctly?

The spark plug should be replaced annually that may help.

As long as you premixed the oil and gas in a seperate container, and its a 2 cycle engine [mixes gas and oil] the only other thing to do would be prime it (normally a little red button you push which preps the motor).

now you know - NEVER buy a used lawnmower
that you have not seen run!!! DOH!

talk about a pig in a poke

I assume it’s a two stroke as you are adding oil to the gas

if it’s a 4 stroke engine - the oil does not go in the gas tank

you may get to be the one to pay for the repair - if it can be repaired - so sorry

    all the best

Get a screwdriver and take the air filter off. There will be a hole underneath it. Put your hand over that hole to make it airtight, and while holding your hand there, pull the string a few times. Then put the air filter back on, screw it on tight, and the engine will start.

is your spark plug connected?is your gas shut off vavle open? s.o.p. is to disconnect plug during shipping or moving. You can pull the spark plug to make sure you have a gap and nothing has shorted across the gap. When you pull the plug is it wet with gas? is your choke plate closing? drip a little fuel mixture directly into carb throat, if the mower starts and then spurters/stops check the jet on the carb, you maynot be getting any gas.

now this is a push mower on 4 wheels right,in the past they made some 2 cycle engines, but i haven’t seen one in years.perhaps its a 4 cycle, they have an oil pan and you don’t mix gas and oil.,or is it a weed eater (string trimmer) then that is 2 cycle …………..tom

get a new spark plug-or the carb might need to be adjusted
