All 4 cycle mower engines use the same oil as cars. If it is new it will call for a detergent oil. Any good grade of 30 weight motor oil will work fine. Each time you use the mower, check the oil level first. The oil should be changed after 20 hours of use. Also after each use, wash it down top and bottom. Your mower will last for years if kept clean and the oil changed.

Lawn mower engines need a lighter weight oil, similar to motorcycles. If you can't find anything specific for lawn mowers, ask the sales people at the auto store such as Napa or Auto Zone or Checker Auto.

if it is a 4 stroke engine then car oil is fine to use. use 10w30 weight. also if it need more oil why don't you change the oil first and then use all new oil? lawn mowers should have their oil changed once a year.
