Does a lawnmower make a good space heater?

lawnmower
JoeyW asked:

In my son’s room we had a 1200W space heater that just died. I can’t afford a new one because they are so damn expensive! I was wondering if I could just wheel my mower in there and start it up to heat up his room while he’s sleeping. I know the noise will make it hard to sleep but he’ll just have to live with that. But will it make enough heat to keep him warm?

Oh my stars, NO! the fumes from the exhaust will asphix, oh hell, will sufficate him. Carbon Monoxide poisoning. The same as if putting a generator in the house.

TMI - here in the gulf coast area, the news is reporting cases of people dying of misuse of their generators. JeRoMe

Are you out of your mind? The fumes will kill the kid. Literally. Paul in San Diego

You are kidding, right? If your mower is gasoline fired, running it in a child’s room will kill him with the fumes. If it is an electric mower, it will not generate any appreciable amount of heat; a 150 watt flood light bulb would produce more.

Seriously, even if you’re on a very tight budget, shop the 2nd hand stores and garage sales. I recently bought a nearly new 1500 watt electric heater at a garage sale for $10. I have seen 1500 watt baseboard heaters at thrift stores for $7.50. oldehippy99

heavens to betsy no!! as everyone said, the fumes will kill him. just wrap him up in a bunch of blankets, throw the dogs on the bed, their body heat will keep him warm. if you don’t have dogs borrow them from a neighbour or friend. LOL Rhiannon Lost at Sea

Why don’t you if you’re that cheap, really don’t have any love for your son, buy an electrical blanket for his bed ? countryboy

Hopefully, you are just joking. If you’re not, then let me be one of the many ppl who stress that this is NOT a good idea in any way. dazed&confused

I had to do the same thing in my son’s room, but it was because the carpet was getting so long I couldn’t find him. alan_has_bean

  10. GTB Says:

    DO NOT DO THIS!

The mower will generate sufficient Carbon Monoxide to kill him in short order.

The heat generated will not be sufficient to do any measurable heating of the area. GTB

    thanks for the belly laugh!

but hey great creative thinking there… take it a few steps further and convert that engine so the fumes won’t kill your family!

Hmmm… some people are a bit tightly wound, aren’t they? LOL! Cookie

Space heaters are expensive, what…. Space heaters are not expensive. You can pick up a 1500 watt heater from Home Depot for about $50.

Very bad idea running any combustion engine in the house. Carbon monoxide + room with no ventilation = death. Come on man, you have to be joking about this. Shawn
