Good noise canceling headphones for lawnmower use?

Ashley S asked:

I just started a new job cutting grass, and cutting lawns gets boring without music. I would love some inconspicuous earbuds to listen to my ipod with and i dont want to ruin my hearing by having to turn my ipod up all the way. Does anyone suggest some good earphones (buds or not) that will help cancel the noise from a lawnmower? I hear most noise canceling headphone will only block out ambient noise, not loud noises.

Sure makes some good earbuds that are noise isolating, not noise cancelling, so they should work well for mowing the lawn. I have a pair and I must admit they kick ace. Go to. They are a little expensive, but I am sure if you look at them to get the idea, you can find some cheaper versions that are similar.

All you really need are hearing protector earmuffs, like these:

Then, you just wear your earbuds under them (I use clip-on earphones myself). If you want, they even make earmuffs with a radio and a place to plug in your iPod or whatever:
However, they are not very inconspicuous. They sell these at Lowes and Home Depot, if I were you I would go there and try a few pairs on to see how they feel. If you want there are even instructions on installing speakers into the earmuffs:
I just go with the earbuds inside the earmuffs, myself.

If you want earbuds for the job, Northern sells these:
