Smells bad, stale gas, stale oil, or both. Real loud, rotted out or missing muffler. Shakes a lot, bent crankshaft or blade out of balance. Forget to check the oil one time (make sure it's empty). It will lock-up quickly. A replacement engine is more expensive than a new mower in most cases! Hard to start, probably partially clogged carburetor, or stale gas.

Bring it to your local small engine repair shop for service. If the blade is shot, replace or sharpen. Consult your manual or set the height for a shorter cut. But not too short. The longer the blade, the longer the root. Have someone local cut your lawn professionally, invest the money. Mom will see the results and get on board.
