It is in the top of the housing you would have to take it and rewind it and the spring.I guess.But be careful do not try to crank the motor with out that housing it could take your hand off or swing loose and knock the crap out of you. the_joker_23123

The pull starter on your lawnmower is spring loaded with a flat clock like spring. To rewind the pull rope, turn the rope pulley clock wise winding it up. Attach the rope to pulley and let it pull the rope in. The rope pulley will turn counter clock wise when you release it pulling the rope around the pulley. You may have to shorten the rope if it doesn't pull all the rope in. If so pull the rope out about 2 inches and re-tye it to the pull handle, you don't wont the handle hanging down. renegadesail

remove the three bolts that hold the cover on, and lift it straight off.
If the recoil spring has relaxed, but is still intact, don't worry about it for now.
tie a good not at one end of the replacement rope { make sure your useing nylon rope. }

push the end of the rope that does not have the not in it, through the hole in the rope plate and on through were it origionally.

slide the rubber handle on it.

Now wind it up as far as you can go, then tie a knot in the handle end of the rope duster

YOu will have to remove the spring and rope housing from the top of the mower. Remove the rest of the rope and just wind the new rope around the pull pully. The more easy way is to go to a lawn mower repair shop and you can buy a whole new replacement top for the mower aussie
