How often can you safely resharpen a lawnmower blade?

I sharpen the edges of the blade on my push mower each year, and I’ve done it 4 times so far. I’m just afraid that after several sharpenings the blade might someday get weak and perhaps break while the motor’s spinning and cause a serious accident, so how do you tell when it’s time to change the blade for a brand new one?

Blades are cheap why risk it? Do you balance the blade when you sharpen? Balancing is important, an unbalanced
blade can destroy engine bearings and bend crankshafts.
You can purchase a balancer for less than $5.

When my Dad ran his mower shop we usually would recommend a new blade when the tip was reduced by about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch. This was for safety reasons, we made more money sharpening blades than selling new ones.

I sharpened the blades on my old MTD mower every year for 22 yrs. without any problem. 4 times is nothing, you haven’t even taken enough off of the blade to make it show.

Replace the blade at any sigh of damage: rust nick bend, etc. Make sure you balance the blade each time you sharpen it. Do this by hanging it on a nail, it should stay horisontal without tiping to either side.
