My name is Bob and I work at Briggs & Stratton so I feel qualified to respond to your e-mail. There are two ways of draining you oil.
1) Under the deck you will find the oil drain plug that your 3/8″ ratchet directly attaches to. Loosen the plug and drain your oil. I would advise disconnecting you spark plug as a safety measure to guarantee the engine will not start while you going thru the process. Reassembly the plug and fill to the “full” mark on the dipstick with 30W oil. Typically 20 oz of oil;however, some oil will remain in the engine after draining so it might only take 18 oz.
2) You can also remove the oil dipstick and tip the mower on its side and drain as much oil out as you can. You may want to make sure you have drained the gas if you use this method due to fuel leaking out of the vented gas cap while you are draining the oil. Refill with 30W oil to the “full” mark on the dipstick. Again it probably will not take a full 20 oz to fill as some residual oil will remain in the engine.

you usually have to take the cap off (where you would add oil) and turn it on its side or over to let the oil drain out then refill it

Place a small bucket under the drain tube and take off the cap from the end of the pipe and drain it into the bucket. Replace the cap and tighten it about 3/4 of a turn after the lid is finger tight. Replace the oil with the type your mower specs call for-usually 10-w 30 weight. fill to level of the dipstick,or to top of resvoir hole. Replace the cap and start mower for a few minutes and shut it off and recheck oil level to be sure it is full. Mow Away!!!!!!

Thats the dipstick, yes you can drain the oil out there, get a drain pan, take the dipstick out, tip the mower over carefully, and drain it. This doesn’t get all the oil out though, there’s a plug at the bottom of the engine (under the deck) that you put a ratchet (without the socket) into, lifting them up on blocks works for me, slip a container underneath, take the drain plug out and let the oil drain till it stops, put the plug back in tight.
NOW, the engine takes 20 ounces of oil maximum…. not a whole quart… if you still have the original 18 ounce oil bottle that came with it, fill that up with any name brand HD-30 weight. Thats a high detergent straight 30 above 40 degrees F.
Use 5w-30 or 10w-30 conventional below 40.
OR use a 5w-30 or 10w-30 synthetic oil anytime. Be sure to use that dipstick, wipe it off in a towel, on a level surface, insert it back in, take it back out, make sure its full or atleast halfway in that cross hatch. Keep it to the full mark, this is not like a car engine, it needs that oil!!
Be sure to dispose of the oil properly… auto parts stores like autozone or advance take used oil. Be sure to check with them first.
To add, change the oil every 25 hours…. to easily keep up with this, they do sell hours meters for them.
Change the paper air filter every year, you can clean the foam prefilter if it has one, but do not oil it.
Change the spark plug when it gets hard to start, Clean it and gap it once a year (.30)
Take a look at the blades once a year, replace or get them sharpened… make sure they are balanced (nail in a post, hang it by the hole and sharpen it on the side it goes off to till its level)
Be sure to remove or mark the things in your yard that you might hit…
And use a fuel stabilizer!!
