thecoolguy asked: first off, is a 4.5 horsepower engine powerful enough? secondly, how would i transfer that power to the wheels?

Use a chain and 2 gears. Weld one of the gears onto an axle for the rear wheels. Attach the other gear to the crankshaft hub of the engine. You’ll need to devise a chain tensioner to keep some tension on the chain. GSD PAL

Yes, that would be suffecient horsepower, unless you wanted to race it. You can transfer power to the wheels in several ways. A gear box, Sprockets and chains, or a direct shaft (Driveshaft ) Whatever you choose, make saftey your first priory. Joe Rightmire

Lawnmower engine? Then it’s a vertical shaft? Its done easier with a horizontal shaft engine. Northern Tool has all the parts you need. jtw122

I strongly suggest that you reconsider for safety reasons. All lawn mowers have a higher center of gravity than go carts and can tip over mover easily. The wheel base is not as wide as go carts either. I know of two deaths to children caused by go carts flipping over. You can buy a used cart and work on it as you like. They are cheap. Keep safety in mind. Good luck. eagle
