My lawnmower is reving up and down and using alot of gas?

lawnmower
Tommy asked:

I change the oil, spark plug, and filter regularly. What am I doing wrong? My last mower did the exact same thing. My current one is only 2 years old and is a Briggs and Stratton 5.0.
Would replacing the carb fix it?
I live in central Florida so I pretty much mow the lawn year round.

it is the governor on the engine that it making it rev up and down and when there is a load on the engine it should run smooth.but check to make sure the air filter is clean a dirty air filter can make it run bad and suck gas. Scott W

loose carb,,,,dirty carb,,,needle jet dirty,,,float adjusted wrong…float ng…[full of fuel or fuel logged]

remove carb…clean inside and out with carb spray…. upside down too

do you run all gas out of tank and carb before winter [or run it every 2/3 weeks in winter??? its important pedro7of9

I’d suggest you run a compression check. How many hours the engine has been run is much more important than how many years old. In my experience the life expectancy of a Briggs engine, consumer variety, is about 100 hours. Price competition forces them to make the engine as cheap as possible. A typical home owner might mow 20-25 hours per season so that amounts to 4-5 years. I’m not knocking Briggs. They make some outstanding commercial engines but what you find in a $200-$300 mass merchandised mower isn’t made for more than a few years use. Howard L
