I have a Troy Bilt Model 675 Selp Propel lawmower. I accidentally put gas in oil tank. I have drained the oil tank but it still smells like gas in there. I just don’t want to ruin the lawnmower. Is there anything else I need to do other than refilling the oil tank?

I’ve doen something idiotic. Was mowing the lawn for an elderly relative and in an early morning stupor put motor oil in a half-filled petrol tank rather than unleaded petrol! Subsequently it won’t start. I was too embarassed to admit my mistake and the relative (who’s pride and joy is his lawn) is now really worried. How can I empty the petrol tank safely - and will any damage have been caused by the motor oil?

A salesman at home depot said to burn all gas before stowing it away until next summer. Is there anything more that should be done? I ran it to burn all gas but there is still engine oil in the oil tank. Is it ok to keep it for almost 6 months? My mower also has a battery for electronic key-start. I guess I will just have to recharge it before use next time.

I’ve never filled the gasoline on a lawnmower before. When I tried to do it today I accidentally spilled some all over the mower because I dont have a funell.
I tried to wipe up the excess with a paper towel but I think some of it got into the engine.
When I turn it on it makes huge puffs of smelly black smoke and then dies after a few seconds.
What should I do to get my mower working again?
Okay. So I waited 20 minutes. Now when I start the engine, it puffs white smoke, not black smoke. But it still dies after 10 seconds or so.
What should I do to fix this problem??
Alright…I’m an idiot.
It looks like I filled the oil tank with gasoline instead of the gasoline tank.
Yeah, I know. Real stupid.
I didn’t realize there was a difference.
So now I obviously know what caused this problem.

What I dont know is what to do about it!
