Hi,

I am Spanish and I know perfectly what you mean. I have been studying English in Spain during 10 years and when I got to London to live in for fist time, I didn´t understand even "hello". The first month I got some basic understanding of the language then I was able to say some sentences...I listed radio, news and make English friends and...I improve a lot.
Join this group on Facebook where they teach Spanish
Contact me if you want to learn, perhaps I can help you and you can help me with my English
¡adiós! Teresa

You can truly only do it if you live among the 'natives' and are forced to hear and speak Spanish almost exclusively, and, then, it still takes time.. Our English sounds about the same to a foreigner -clatter, clatter, clatter. So, in conversational Spanish, you would just have to live with them and give yourself at least 6 months 'to get along pretty well.' But, as someone else mentioned, if you ask for a simplified slowed-down pace, the Spaniard or Mexican will oblige particularly in pecuniary matters. te144

Probably because they are cutting somebody's lawn when they talk to you. Simply ask them to turn off the lawnmower or leaf blower and ask them the question again. It should sound better that way. Hope this helps. tommyd210

Practice. Talk to as many spanish speaking people as you can. It is very frustrating at first, but eventually it will click, and you will be able to distinguish each word. travis s

The same way people learn English, except its the British who talk like lawnmowers. Americans pronounciate our words, we dont slosh them to an unrecognisable gargle. You would have a hard time finding a society that talks slow enough so a foreigner can translate in real time. Pb5678

I had the same problem when I started. Just say, "habla mas despacio por favor", and most native Spanish speakers will be happy to slow down.

You'll learn! humynism

You just need to get the words even more perfectly so that u can understand sentences. A lot of people who speak spanish use a lot of slang too so maybe that could be the problem Lili
