Always try to turn a situation of this type into a win for you as well as a win for the other party, and you will go through life making friends and gaining respect. If they don't want it, definitely don't leave it -- but do that, by letting them know you have taken care to not leave something behind that might be a burden to the new owner. One way or another, there is almost always some approach you can take that will let the other person know you have tried hard to be considerate and treat them kindly.
