However big the lawn is don't buy a flymo - get a rotary electric or petrol mower.. Get an electric one if the lawn is amller and a pterol one if the lawn is bigger. Remember petrol mowers are a lot heavier than electric ones and this may be an issue if you are mowing on a slope of need to carry it up and down steps.

The question which mower is better is a bit like asking someone if red is better than blue, or a sports car better than a four wheel drive jeep. If you have an acre to mow, you better not be using a small electric mower, nor even a small gas powered mower. If you only have a small lawn, grass that will not be too tall, and grass that will not be wet, then the electric mower might work. Personally, I wouldn’t like having to drag a long electrical cord around. In addition, if you have to mow around trees or objects, you’re likely to get frustrated with cords getting caught or wrapped around things. But again, it all depends upon what you have and what you need, and not so much as what someone else thinks.

1) Get a soil test, then lime and fertilize according to the recommendations.
2) Find out what the correct cutting height is for the species of grass in your lawn. (for kentucky bluegrass, for instance, it's 2-3"). Mow to the taller height, and never remove more than 1/3 of the height of the plant per mowing. (for this example, mow with the mower set at 3" every time the lawn gets 4" tall).
3) Keep the mower blade sharp.
4) Depending on your soil type, you may need to aerate. Typically, you don't need to aerate in sandy soil, do need to with a clay soil.

Gasoline powered mowers generally develop more torque than electric mowers, so can get through thick grass. Electric mowers are quieter. Corded electric mowers have a better chance of getting through a thick lawn than battery mowers.
Reel mowers (push mowers) will do a nice job of cutting, and give you some good exercise.

Whatever you do, don't buy a mower with a 2-cycle engine (the sort where you mix oil and gas for the gas tank). They're very polluting -- I'm not even sure if they're legal anymore.

If you're in the US, the extension service is quite likely to have pamphlets and web pages about what's good lawn care in your part of the US. Typical examples:

I'm not on this Electric Mower but it seems it would save on gas cause gas is expensive right now $3.50 here where i live but I would have to say get a gas mower and the best brand to get is Yardman or a Honda brand and make sure you get one that moves by handle cause you can get tired pretty fast if it doesn't have that option and if you want to do the yard only once a week make sure you lower the mower to a lvl 3 anything higher is for wet grass

electric of course. reliable and will not EXPLODE. you can simply switch off if any odd behaviour. whereas with gas, the slightest movement can prove explodingly fatal. think twice please. get what everyone uses. no experiments

petrol is better if it is large or you want to use it for a longer period as electric ones burn out.

Petrol (gas) ones last longer and can deal with tougher conditions

Also less risk or electicuting yourself!
