why does toro lawnmower engine make popping noise?

Recently replaced flywheel key and spark plug on 6.5 hp the engine starts and runs fine except for it sounds like it has a misfire and makes a popping noise I didn’t gap the spark plug cause don’t know what it should be any suggestions?

    Yes, gap the plug. On a 6.5 hp the gap is probably around.018? Try google and look for 6.5 hp toro lawn mowers. Its probably a briggs and straton motor so try that also. Remember to look for specs. when searching.

    bad plug gap won’t make it pop that ive seen though it will misfire. its likely a lean mixture from the carb jet being plugged or something. it can actually run smooth with a sheared flywheel key on a leaner mixture and then once you fix the ign timing it can surge or pop. clean out the carb/fuel tank/line and try again. and gap the plug .030 inches about. +/- .005 is fine too. you might as well gap the plug first though since thats easy. make sure you have fresh gas.
