    If you overfill the oil in the crankcase, oil can be forced into the cylinder and burn along with the gas. Drain the oil form the mower, refill to the correct level and you should be ok. Paul O provided an excellent answer on yahoo answers at:

    You are either burning oil or your carburetor is set to run too rich. From what you say the overfilled oil is probably the culprit.
